Keymotif: A Unique Key Holder Inspired by Traditional Textiles

Bringing History to Everyday Life

In search for a new generation of souvenirs that would bring up hidden aspects of our history, designer Vassilis Mylonadis created Keymotif. This innovative key holder is inspired by the motifs found on textiles produced by a traditional loom in Northern Greece. By transforming these motifs into a 3D object, Keymotif brings history into our everyday lives.

The idea behind Keymotif is to create a key holder that not only serves a practical purpose but also adds a touch of art and culture to our surroundings. The designer's inspiration came from the intricate motifs found on textiles created by skilled weavers using traditional looms. These motifs are rich in history and symbolism, representing the cultural heritage of Greece.

What sets Keymotif apart from other key holders is its unique interaction with the user. When a key holder is removed from its base, it leaves behind a colored footprint, symbolizing the absence of the user from their home or office. This concept adds a poetic and artistic element to the design, turning a simple everyday object into a meaningful piece of decor.

Keymotif is made from laser-cut okoume wood and white plexiglass. The combination of these materials required careful fine-tuning to achieve the desired result. The base of the key holder measures 110mm x 110mm x 30mm, and it comes with two key holders. The package, made of stamped cardboard with a rubber band, measures 120mm x 140mm x 33mm.

The design of Keymotif presented several challenges for the designer. The transition from traditional folklore to a contemporary design required finding the right balance between natural materials and modern elements. After numerous tests, okoume plywood was chosen for its sturdiness and aesthetic appeal, while plexiglass was selected for its bending capabilities. The combination of these materials resulted in a well-balanced product that pays homage to Greece's rich cultural heritage.

Keymotif was exhibited at "It's all, oh so souvenir to me" and "Parousies 2017" in Athens, Greece. The project started in October 2016 and was completed in December 2016.

This unique key holder has received recognition for its innovative design. Keymotif was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, showcasing practicality, innovation, and integration of industry best practices.

Keymotif is not just a key holder; it is a piece of art that brings history and culture into our everyday lives. With its intricate motifs and unique interaction, it serves as a reminder of the rich heritage of Greece and the beauty that can be found in everyday objects.
